Amino acids

Amino acids are the smaller units from which proteins are assembled. Each has a central carbon bonded to hydrogen, an amino group, a carboxyl group, and a variable side chain called R. The twenty proteinogenic amino acids differ in this side chain and can be grouped by properties such as charge, polarity, hydrophobicity, aromaticity, or special chemical features.
